Kings Hants MP Scott Brison Resigns

Scott Brison has been an active member within the political community for nearly 22 years, and most recently winning his last election with 71% of the vote after much thought, Brison had announced his resigning as President of the Treasury Board from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s cabinet due to personal reasons and to focus on his family (Husband, Maxime Saint-Pierre and two daughters Claire and Rose).

Brison was first elected in 1997 in the Kings Hants district as a member of the Conservative Party described as a Progressive Conservative “Young Turk” for his youthful outlook on politics. In 2000, Brison resigned as a PC leader then appointed as co-chair of the Tories, Election and Policy Platform Committee and then proceeded to become the vice-president of investment banking at Yorkton Securities in Toronto. In 2003 Brison proceeded to cross the floor to sit as a liberal MP. Throughout Brison’s political career he had sparked attention and recognition for being the first openly gay member of parliament. This had played a large significance for young folk especially around Acadia University’s campus. Brison encourages young people to get involved without fear. Brison’s resigning received large support but surprised of the news Brison had announced. It was rumored that Brison was going to take a smaller more local action within the political realms. However, in recent interviews Brison had expressed that was not the case. His resignation is a family decision and to try a different path other than politics. “I’m not leaving federal politics to jump into another politics … my intention is to consider options and opportunities outside of politics.” Given Brison’s background and knowledge having graduated from Dalhousie University in commerce it would not be surprising to see a new path regarding small business to prosper within the King Hants riding.

Another note to consider is the opening for a new liberal candidate in the kings hants riding, this could spark up new opportunities and fresh new and young individuals to truly make a difference in politics. Acadia Professor Dr. Andrew Biro had expressed and analyzed a possible switch from liberal riding to conservative. Prior to 2003, Kings hants and the large majority of the annapolis Royal had been a conservative riding. Could the resigning of Scott Brison effectively change turning Kings-Hants into a conservative riding?
