This Week’s Netflix Recommendation: “Maid”

Are you looking for something good to watch? Did you watch EVERYTHING over the strike? Well, if so, I suggest giving the Netflix show Maid a try.

The Netflix original limited series follows Alex, a newly single mother who must find a way to make ends meet after escaping an abusive relationship with the father of her child. She is fighting not only for her own freedom, but for the freedom of her daughter, Maddy. Alex is willing to go through all the necessary systems, regardless of their difficulty, to make sure Maddy has everything she needs in life.

In reality, many women face similar situations as Alex does in this series. Maid is actually based on the true story of Stephanie Land who documented her experience in her memoir “Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother’s Will to Survive”.

This series gives a realistic view of what it is really like for women trying to escape abusive relationships. Also, the depiction of the struggles within the government assistance programs in America allows for viewers to gain an understanding of all the work that goes into them. In the show, Alex feels as though she is drowning. She has to become financially stable so that she can take Maddy back, apply for numerous government aid programs, find a place to live, go to court, etc. On top of all of this, she must keep tabs on her mother who is not very stable during this time. Essentially, she has multiple full-time jobs and no time or energy for any of it.

Maid was released on October 26, 2021 and has received much praise. On Rotten Tomatoes, the show scored 94% on the average tomatometer while the average audience scored it at 88%.
