  • Navigating Sustainable Fashion in a Small Town

Navigating Sustainable Fashion in a Small Town

The term “fast fashion” was coined at the end of the 20th century, and the industry has been nothing if not true to its name. Over the past few decades fast fashion retailers have evolved from a growing business to a norm within the fashion industry, with the internet greatly expanding their reach and speed. The modern mix of technology, industrialization, and globalisation has laid the groundwork for an industry that is constantly reinventing it’s image and rarely improving it’s practices.

Lately trend cycles have felt as though they’re moving at a breakneck speed, styles going in and out of fashion on a seemingly monthly basis. For university students, especially in a small town like Wolfville, ordering from fast fashion retailers may seem like a simple and affordable option for keeping up with trends. It’s easy, affordable, and the packages are delivered right to your doorstep. While the veneer of simplicity that fast fashion presents is certainly appealing, the truth of the industry is far more complicated.

There are numerous issues hidden away in the back end of fast fashion. The industry is known for engaging in intellectual theft, exploitation, and environmental pollution. The human rights abuses within the industry were brought to mainstream attention after the Rana Plaza disaster claimed the lives of 1,134 people in 2013, but exploitation still lives on within the system of fast fashion. There is another aspect of the industry that is infringing on global wellbeing, its massive environmental impact.

Most North Americans have never seen the pollution and waste that is produced by the fast fashion industry first hand. Fashion has an incredibly large footprint to keep so quiet, given that “[t]he fashion industry is currently responsible for more annual carbon emissions than all international flights and maritime shipping combined.” There are several points in the life cycle of a fast fashion garment at which pollution is an issue. This toxic side of fashion includes the use of water, chemicals, and plastic based fabrics during production, the carbon footprint of shipping garments globally, and the large amounts of waste produced by excess consumption.

There are several reasons why someone may want to break away from fast fashion, but it’s hard to know where to begin. This is especially true for university students who often have limited budgets and lack access to transportation. Luckily, Wolfville is home to several shops that offer vintage and second hand clothes. Retro Runway Fashions, Jane’s Again Boutique, and Daisy Roots Vintage all offer unique second hand finds steps away from the Acadia campus.

Shopping second hand has become a trend in it’s own right over the past decade. From Macklemore’s 2012 hit “Thrift Shop” to the thrift haul videos that have populated YouTube for years, thrift shopping has continued to entice consumers looking to curate a certain style. High fashion brands and fashion brands have both capitalised on the imagery of second hand clothes (one example of this is a popular skirt from the Miu Miu SS22 collection that evokes the lowrise silhouette of the early 2000s and the styling of deconstructed menswear — a look that has already been picked up on by fast fashion retailer Fashion Nova). Ultimately, thrifting is about more than just a vintage or upcycled aesthetic. Sure, it’s a great way to find one of a kind items and resurrect old styles, but it’s also a path to break free of the endless cycle of fast fashion that has overtaken our culture.

Second hand shopping can help with a number of the prevalent issues within the fashion industry. Buying used garments allows for consumers to enjoy new styles without the need for new items to be mass produced. Giving an item new life can also help prevent it from being thrown away (which is especially significant considering that in 2015 Americans threw away 21 billion pounds of clothing and textiles). Shopping second hand also creates the opportunity to find high quality, unique pieces for accessible prices.

I had the opportunity to speak with Jani MacDonald, the owner of Jane’s Again Boutique, about the benefits of shopping second hand and the joys of the Wolfville community. Jane’s Again is a consignment shop located on Main St. in Wolfville that has been in business for 14 years. The shop offers trendy, modern styles for women of all ages. The shop offers second hand clothing from a number of brands, including pieces from major fast fashion retailers that have been given new life.

For Jane’s Again, it’s all about coming together as a community of women to share in fashion. Jani emphasised the goal of the store to help all women access fashion, regardless of age or budget. According to Jani “the whole premise of Jane’s is for women to share with women. In conjunction with being more sustainable, it was also about women sharing with women because not everyone has the means to go out and drop a lot of money on clothing. We should all be able to feel good about ourselves.”

When asked about the best part about running Jane’s Again in Wolfville, Jani highlighted the community of both employees and shoppers. Jani commented that “you’ve got young women in this town that are just getting started. They’re so optimistic about their education and about life. I can’t tell you how amazing it is to be in a town like Wolfville and see that and be a part of that every day.”

Breaking away from large fast fashion corporations has larger impacts on the community as well. Shopping locally reduces transport emissions and helps to support the Wolfville community. Second hand shopping has a rich history within Nova Scotia, Jani highlighted that “Nova Scotia has been leading the way in second hand clothing.” Nova Scotians have long embraced buying used clothing, Frenchys being an early example of a second hand clothing shop that has grown to have locations across the province.

Making a clean break from fast fashion is a nearly impossible task in the modern landscape, but that doesn’t mean that there are no sustainable fashion options. Making conscious fashion choices doesn’t have to be an all or nothing endeavour, and it doesn’t have to be a difficult task either. Shopping second hand can be an exciting and budget friendly way to explore fashion and incorporating it into your life can make your wardrobe more sustainable. There are always ways to make your style a little bit more friendly to the planet — even in a small town.

Hello Dr. Ricketts, Dr. Keefe, and Mr. Demone,

I am sure you are receiving many of these emails right about this time, with varying tones and demands of you. Unfortunately, due to the lack of communication the students have received, this is another one of those emails.

As you are no doubt aware, today marks two weeks that the faculty has been on strike. According to Dr. Keefe’s latest news statement, “students are taking advantage of this downtime to catch up, get ahead of coursework, exercise, and rest”. I can assure you this is far from the truth. This time is taking a severe mental health toll on students, who feel completely lost without being able to contact faculty members for course guidance. Sure, many of us have long-term projects to “catch up” on, but how are we expected to do well if faculty are unavailable? Now, before you twist this to blame the faculty, it has been communicated to students that the administration has not reached out to negotiate since the strike began, clearly communicating the lack of regard you have for us in the face of financial decisions for the university. Students are not “resting”, they are struggling to get out of bed and find the motivation to do anything. Myself, and many of my friends, don’t see much of a point in doing coursework with no end to this limbo in sight.

That being said, I understand that your stance is that refunds will not be administered until the “academic term is impacted”. You cannot seriously look me in the eye and say that my academic term has not been impacted this far. I have paid, so far, for two weeks of course content that I have not, and likely will not, receive. With current NS tuition fees, that amounts to $700 ($70/day for 10 days) that I have paid to sit twiddling my thumbs and await word from the administration.

    This is unacceptable.

Based on your last email, you are considering either a condensed or extended academic term. I sincerely hope that you are not going to claim that because the term was modified, it was not impacted. If the term is condensed, I am likely paying to receive truncated course content, or content that is so rapidly thrown at students that we barely have time to breathe in-between essays and tests. If the term is extended, that impacts summer job start dates, and therefore hinders the ability to secure gainful summer employment, and our income. In either case, the academic term will be impacted, and I sincerely hope that you refund our tuition to reflect this.

It is one thing to claim that the faculty went on strike, and that they are the ones who impacted our term. However, your refusal to return to the negotiating table and end this limbo state for students is what is prolonging the negative effects of this strike, to our health and our wallets.

Please show us you are better than the behaviour you are currently displaying, and return to the negotiating table so students can once again have faith and trust in the institution they attend.

    Sincerely,

    Emily Holmes

  • Reasons to Wake Up

    Reasons to Wake Up

A time of restlessness, anxiety, dreariness. We are adrift amongst ambiguity, searching for a sense of stability. Regardless of how difficult things become or seem to be, what are we to hold on to? For many, motivation hides in the darkness of uncertainty, and so I invite you to reflect on what brings light to your day. What gets you out of bed in the morning?

Highlighted below are reasons to wake up, gathered from the surrounding community. Feel free to enjoy, or to find inspiration in discovering your own. At the very least, I hope this may be enough to get you out of bed.

    • Something that always gets me out of bed in the morning and brings light to my day are my friends! When I moved here, I was required to build my own support network which is very important to my well being. I am so grateful to have found friends who are caring, intelligent, and supportive through challenging times. They feel like family.

    • Being able to communicate with people and finding meaningful connections after being in isolation for so long, whether it be close friends or meeting someone new.

    • Experiencing nature!

    • There’s this art mural painted on the sides of an overpass in Ottawa. It’s kind of geometric but it has flowers on it and it reminds me of spring! It made me very happy to walk by. I’m not sure if it always gets me out of bed, but it’s nice to think about.

    • That’s a hard one and it probably changes, but funny enough, having to feed my cat is one of the biggest things that gets me out of bed. The smell of coffee. SUNLIGHT. I genuinely look forward to moving in whatever way my body needs me to as well.

    • I wish this wasn’t such a difficult question to answer, but in all honesty, some days are definitely easier than others. I think other than school or work, what gets me out of bed is just knowing there’s potential for a good day! Maybe that’s cheesy.

    • This is beautiful! For me, the sun, or eating my favourite meal for breakfast.

    • What gets me out of bed in the morning is knowing that I get to do what I’m passionate about, and hopefully making a difference in someone else’s life. I can’t necessarily do that every day because times are weird, but I am trying to find time to appreciate the simple joys in my life. Movement, going outside, revisiting a favourite book, or opening a window and listening to the birds sing.

    • Sometimes just the thought of escape. Exploring new places, or fancy dinners with my friends.

    • Food! And to pay for food.

    • I remind myself there will always be excitement, laughter to be found. I find gratitude in overcoming challenges. It boils down to accepting that the good and the bad will always be there, and appreciating life because of it.

    • Even if today isn’t the best day, the good is always available to us. I can make a positive impact on someone else. I can smile and make someone else smile.

    • The coffee he leaves for me on the bedside table every morning.

    • As someone who had a heavy battle with substance abuse, dealing with stress of school and my career, it was so important for me to switch my mentality from dreading the mornings to enjoying them. To wake up and watch the sunrise instead of just seeing it. Being more productive with my time, and not feeling depressed or drained from the night before; this is what has made getting out of bed very rewarding to me. Let’s not forget about the first sip of coffee, or a disco dance party playlist which is just so much fun! The list goes on.

    • What helps me is one particular page of a poetry book that I like to read about how people should fall in love more with simplicity; with the way their coffee swirls as soon as they pour the milk in, or hitting the snooze button over and over again. Falling in love with moments and the little things that make life extraordinary.

    • Honestly, I’ve struggled with depression for the majority of my life, and on the worst days when I can’t get up, my dog crawls into bed with me. It’s impossible not to find comfort in that! I cannot imagine my life without my dog.

    • Knowing I have friends and family to look forward to hearing from me every day.

    • That’s a tough one, and it changes every day. Mostly it is knowing that even if I feel like when I wake up it won’t be, today could be the best day I ever had. And I won’t be able to see it if I give up right away, so I push through to see it.

    • The answer that comes to me right away would be that I feel a sense of purpose. I know that I have more to contribute by engaging in society rather than laying in bed all day – no matter how warm it is. Also, I think every day feels like a new opportunity to figure out what I really want from life.

    • Another opportunity to speak to, think of, and see all of those that I love and who love me. Realizing every day how rich I am because of that love.

    • Getting out of bed is made easy when you consider every morning how it would feel not being able to. Being grateful is knowing how much more there is to do and see, how much I can grow as a person. I can improve my circumstances, be wrong, and change my mind about things. I can keep growing from these experiences, and maybe adding to the life of someone else as they add to mine. We have such a limited time floating around the sun.
