We have just learned that the African Descent Student Opportunity Success Coordinator position will not be renewed for this year! The position was previously filled by Dotun Olutoke who has worked tirelessly to provide support and resources for Black students.
We want to organize a peaceful protest in front of Uhall to hold the university accountable for this decision. Creating this position provided Black students with much needed support and resources, by removing it they are disregarding the needs of Black students.
Why should you care?
- Last year Dotun orchestrated the black history month events including the Black excellence gala where multiple students were given bursaries
- Dotun has provided students facing food insecurity with grocery cards and meal hall cards.
He has provided support to Black Student Clubs such as the Acadia Caribbean Union, The Black Student Association and Sisters of Color •He has advocated for the needs of students behind the scenes and done so much more
What can we do?
- Sign a petition requesting that the position not be removed
- Request a sit down with the Vice Provost and other faculty so that we can get answers and voice our concerns
- Peacefully protest in the front of University Hall in order to hold the university accountable for this decision.
