Axewomen fall short in three-peating as AUS champions

HALIFAX, N.S. – The UPEI Panthers are AUS champions after defeating the Acadia Axewomen by a score of 78-59 in Sunday’s Subway AUS Women’s Basketball Championship final. This mark’s the Panthers’ first conference banner since the 1997-98 season.

AUS first team all-star Reese Baxendale led the way for the Panthers with 25 points on 9-of-20 from the floor, including 5-of-12 from three. She also contributed seven assists, five rebounds and three steals in the effort, winning her Championship MVP, Subway Player of the Game honours and a place on the tournament all-star team.

Acadia was led in scoring by AUS first team all-star Haley McDonald who chipped in 18 points (7-of-23 from the floor, 1-of-8 from three), four assists, three rebounds and three steals in the loss.

Acadia opened the game’s scoring with a driving layup by Rachel Clouatre-Trudeau, however the Axewomen struggled to knock down some long jumpers early, going 0-for-5 from three over the first 10 minutes.

McDonald led the way for Acadia with seven first-quarter points, helping the Axewomen to an 18-17 lead heading to the second.

The Panthers led by as many as six points in the opening quarter as AUS first team all-star Reese Baxendale found her shot early, matching McDonald’s seven points on 3-of-4 shooting while picking up three assists in the opening frame.

AUS most valuable player, defensive player of the year, and first team all-star Jenna Mae Ellsworth, who was held to two points in the opening quarter, knocked down two threes at the beginning of the second on her way to 10 points in the quarter, and helped UPEI take a 37-31 lead into halftime.

Baxendale and Ellsworth led all scorers at the break with 12 apiece for the Panthers, while McDonald and Clouatre-Trudeau led the Axewomen with nine points each.

Mia Roberts started the third quarter on a mission, scoring eight straight Axewomen points over the first five minutes of the second half, but the Panthers always had an answer, keeping Acadia at bay.

UPEI’s defence, anchored by Ellsworth, held the prolific-scoring McDonald in check through three quarters with 13 points on 5-of-17 from the field and 0-for-5 from deep.

Baxendale continued to score well in the third with seven in the quarter en route to 19 points on 7-of-15 shooting heading into the fourth as the Panthers led the Axewomen 54-47 with just 10 minutes to play.

Acadia began the fourth showing full-court pressure on defence, turning a couple of UPEI turnovers into easy points at the rim and cutting the lead down to three points with 7:07 to play, but Baxendale immediately knocked down yet another timely three, pushing the lead back to six.

The Panthers refused to be denied, though, as they ended the game on a 16-0 run that began at the 5:12 mark, holding the Axewomen scoreless over the final 5:42 of the game, and ending the game with their biggest lead at 19 points.

This is the Panthers’ first women’s basketball banner since the 1997-98 season.

Tournament all-stars for the women’s event are Memorial’s Haille Nickerson, UNB’s Michaela Dodig, Acadia’s Haley McDonald and UPEI’s Ellsworth and Baxendale.

The Panthers will travel to Ottawa, Ont. for the U SPORTS Final 8 women’s basketball championship being co-hosted by the University of Ottawa and Carleton March 5-8.

Tigers top Axewomen 3-1 in last regular season game

HALIFAX, N.S. – The Dalhousie Tigers defeated the Acadia Axewomen 3-1 (25—23, 25-18, 24-26, 25-19) Saturday afternoon in the final match of the 2019-20 AUS regular season.

Both teams traded points in the first set, with the Tigers leading most of the set until the Axewomen made a six-point surge and took a 16-15 lead into the technical time out. Down, but not out, the Tigers battled back and took the set 25-23.

Acadia came out firing in the second set and were up 6-1 early one. The Tigers slowly started to close the gap and were up 16-15 at the technical time out. The Axewomen scored just three more points in the set, falling 25-18.

The Axewomen got off to another early lead in the third set, but the Tigers again clawed their way back in. The teams traded leads in the second half of the set and it was the Axewomen who came out on top this time, taking the third set 26-24.

Dalhousie rebounded in the fourth and were up 12-7 thanks in large part to three-consecutive service aces from Courtney Baker (Bridgewater, N.S.). • Axewomen split weekend vs Capers with a 79-60 win

Axewomen split weekend vs Capers with a 79-60 win

SYDNEY, NS – In Sunday afternoon basketball action, the Cape Breton Capers hosted the Acadia Axewomen at the Sullivan Field House in Sydney. The Axewomen were able to earn a weekend split by handing the CAPERS a 79-60 defeat.

The CAPERS were unable to stop the Axewomen offence in the first quarter and gave up 29 points. The CAPERS couldn’t mount much offence in response and only put up 15 in the first quarter. It was more of the same in the second quarter as Acadia was scoring at will and took a huge 51-27 lead into half-time.

The CAPERS got off to a rough start in the second half as well and at one-point Acadia held CBU without a point for 5 minutes. The CAPERS did come alive in the 4th and outscored Acadia 20-11 in the final quarter but it was much too little too late. Acadia had better numbers in all shooting categories. They were also dominant on the defensive end forcing 18 turnovers and getting 10 steals.

The CAPERS were led in scoring Monique Calliste (Toronto, ON) with 20 points, 12 rebounds and 4 assists. Audrey Rankin (Prince George’s County, MD) also had a strong showing in her final home game as a CAPER. The 5th-year senior put up 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds despite the loss.

The Axewomen were once again led in scoring by current AUS scoring leader Haley MacDonald who had an efficient 21 points to go along with 4 assists and 3 rebounds. Acadia also received a strong game from Jayda Veinot who had 20 points and 4 rebounds in the victory. Rachel Cloutare-Trudeau, 13 and Mia Roberts, 10 also hit double figures for the victors.

The Axewomen’s Haley MacDonald was named the Subway Player of the Game. Acadia remains in 1st place with a record of 15-4 with the win. The CAPERS fall to 8-11 on the year and are in 5th place.

The Axewomen wrap up their regular season on Wednesday, February 19th when they host Saint Mary’s at 6 pm. The CAPERS play their last regular-season game Friday, February 21st when they travel to Antigonish to take on ST.FX at 6 pm.  All the action can be seen on AUSTV.CA.

  • Axewomen post 3-0 sweep of U SPORTS No. 2 Dalhousie

Axewomen post 3-0 sweep of U SPORTS No. 2 Dalhousie

WOLFVILLE, N.S. – The Axewomen volleyball team stunned the visiting U SPORTS No. 2 ranked Dalhousie Tigers with a three-set win in Sunday afternoon play. The Tiger loss is the first match lost since February 15 last season.

“Today was a great team win! We had multiple individuals rise today which contributed to our success,” said Axewomen head coach Michelle Wood. “There is always emotion involved in any match that we play, however today in particular the team played for the senior athletes that have helped build our program. Ultimately, we accomplished our goal today, but our sights are still set on something greater. The beautiful part about sport is that it’s the moments along the way that help propel programs.”

The undefeated Tigers jumped out to an early 5-2 lead in the opening set, but the Axewomen tied the game up at six on a Dalhousie attack error. A kill by Peyton DeWolfe sparked a run that ended at 13-7 on an Acadia service error.

The Tigers battled back to tie the match up at 14 on a Victoria Turcot service ace, but the Axewomen once again took control and the lead. The action was neck and neck until 20-20 when two Dalhousie attack errors combined with a Jamie Crocket kill and a Hannah Helm service ace ended the set at a 25-20 win for the hometown Axewomen.

More of the ‘see-saw’ battle continued into the second set with no more than two points separating the teams until a 12-12 tie was broken by a kill by Bianca Ruiz triggering a rally that included three Lucy Glen-Carter service aces in a row, a Hannah Helm kill and another Glen-Carter ace to give Acadia a 20-13 lead.

The Tigers responded six-point rally, but it wasn’t enough and the Axewomen collected a 25-22 second set win.

Could the Tigers face a three-game sweep? Once again only two points separated the teams in the opening minutes of the third and eventual final set.  Dalhousie pushed to a 9-6 lead on a Victoria Haworth service ace and an Acadia attack error, but the Axewomen would post another rally to give them a comfortable 12-9 margin.

Acadia pushed to a 17-12 advantage and retained the lead until Tiger Julie Moore nailed two consecutive kills to give Dalhousie a 21-20 lead. Lucy Glen-Carter landed four kills in the closing of the third set for the eventual 27-25 win. One of Glen-Carter’s kills broke the 25-25 tie and her last of four ended the match.

Glen-Carter ended with match high 12 kills and a hitting efficiency of 0.355. Subway Player of the Game Jamie Crocket added nine kills for an amazing efficiency of 0.438. Rookie setter Sydney Zakutney handled the playmaking with 31 sets, while Becky Dorsey had a team high 14 digs. Hannah Helm had 3 solo and 1 assisted blocks in the win.

Tiger Victoria Haworth had a team high eight kills and teammates Julie Moore and Victoria Turcot added seven each. Haworth had four solo blocks in the loss.

The Axewomen take on Moncton this Monday night in a make-up game that was postponed on Friday due to inclement weather. Next weekend the Axewomen head to Saint Mary’s on Friday followed by Saturday’s season-ending matchup against Dalhousie in Halifax.

The Tigers’ season wraps up with a rematch against Acadia next Saturday night.

  • Volleyball Axewomen sweep three-game weekend series vs Memorial

Volleyball Axewomen sweep three-game weekend series vs Memorial

WOLFVILLE, N.S. – ‘Three straight sets’ was the storyline this weekend as the Axewomen volleyball team completed a three-match sweep this weekend against the visiting Memorial Sea-Hawks.

Today’s 3-0 win was the third time Acadia swept a match against the Sea-Hawks this weekend.

Outside Hitter Bianca Ruiz was named the Subway Player of the Game after posting eight kills, 11 digs, one service ace, and a solo block.

“We are all pretty happy (with the three wins). We worked pretty hard this weekend and we were set on our goals and we accomplished them all. We are pretty proud of ourselves,” noted Ruiz following the win.

The Sea-Hawks jumped out to a 2-0 lead – their first of the weekend but the Axewomen quickly grabbed a 6-3 lead off the service work by Sydney Zakutney who landed two aces.

Down 19-12, the Sea-Hawks pulled together a rally that squeezed the lead down to 22-19. Acadia held on the slim advantage for the eventual 25-23 win.

Once again, close in the opening of the second set, a kill by Acadia’s Jamie Crocket gave the Axewomen a somewhat insurmountable lead that would hold until the final point in a 25-13 win.

With a 5-3 lead early in the third game, the Sea-Hawks pushed the lead to 10-8 until a service ace by Jamie Crocket and a Memorial attack error tied the game at 10.

Memorial would not give in and continued to fight for the lead. Two kills by Crocket would give Acadia a 20-16 lead into the home stretch. A kill by Lucy Glen-Carter gave the Axewomen a 25-21 set win and a 3-0 match victory.

Glen-Carter and Collombin combined for 18 kills – nine each, while Ruiz added eight. First-year setter Sydney Zakutney posted 29 of 33 assists.

Emily Batt was named the Sea-Hawks player of the game. Batt recorded five kills and two service aces. Kaitlyn Kuchinka posted a team-high 6 kills. Katie Wagar was the top defender with 19 digs.

The Axewomen improve to 10-6 and trail the second-place Saint Mary’s Huskies by two points in the standings. Though, the Huskies have a game in hand.

This year’s AUS playoff format has changed and the first and second place teams in the final standings host a three-match semi-final series against the fourth and third place teams respectively.

The Axewomen return to the court this coming weekend against fifth-place Moncton on Friday and undefeated and first place Dalhousie on Sunday. Dalhousie, Saint Mary’s, Acadia and UNB have clinched a playoff berth. The remaining two weeks will determine who will host the two semi-final series.

The Sea-Hawks remain winless and host UNB for three matches next weekend.

Axewomen lose first game of regular season to Memorial

JOHN’S, NL – The Memorial Sea-Hawks split the series against the Acadia Axewomen after their win Sunday, 87-79.

The Axewomen were leading at the end of the first half. It was an exceptionally competitive half of basketball. No one player truly dominated in the first twenty minutes of action. Both teams were struggling to score, due to both teams locking down on defense. Acadia shot 36% from the field, whereas MUN shot 29%. Acadia held a four point lead at half, 37-33.

Haley McDonald and Rachel Clouatre-Trudeau both had 10 points for Acadia at halftime. Alana Short had 10 points for the Hawks at the half. It was fairly balanced scoring for both teams.

The second half was an incredible display of competition, hustle, and grit. The Axewomen opened up the half on a 12-2 run. MUN weathered the storm and made a solid comeback, bringing the score back to a one-point difference at the end of the third. Tempers flared in the third, with both coaches earning technical fouls. It was a tense competition from the tip-off to the final whistle.

The fourth quarter was an impressive display of teamwork and execution for the Hawks, going on a solid 7-0 run, taking the lead. The Hawks managed to maintain control of the game in the final frame with multiple role players stepping up in the clutch.

Innes Salat Margarit, Hannah Green, and Sammi Deakin-Sharpe all contributed massively off the bench. Sammi Deakin-Sharpe earned herself player-of-the-game commendations off 17 points. Alana Short was the top scorer for MUN today, posting 25 points.

For the Axewomen, Haley McDonald, Rachel Clouatre-Trudeau, and Sarsha Cadle were the bright spots. Cadle posted another solid double-double with 15 points, 12 rebounds. McDonald was Acadia’ top scorer with 25. Cloautre-Trudeau had a respectable 19 points, and 6 assists.

MUN stands 4-2 in the season. They take on St. FX on the road for their next matchup.

  • No. 5 Axewomen remain undefeated with 2-1 win over host UNB

No. 5 Axewomen remain undefeated with 2-1 win over host UNB

FREDERICTON, NB – The U SPORTS No. 5 Acadia Axewomen got a pair of goals from fifth-year striker Jenna Boudreau (Halifax, NS) to beat the UNB Reds 2-1 on Saturday afternoon.

Boudreau scored in the 34th and 54th minutes.

“We knew coming in that UNB was a really tough team,” said Boudreau. “They’re really strong offensively and they did well defensively, they were disciplined and gave us a really good game.”

The Reds took an early 1-0 lead when Sylvie Fecteau (Moncton, NB) converted a penalty kick in the 17th minute.

The penalty came after Abby Sullivan (Orleans, Mass.) was taken down in the 18-yard box by Axewomen keeper Sarah Charnock (Newmarket, ON). Charnock was given a yellow card on the play as well.

Boudreau brought the visitors even when she was left alone in front of the UNB net and tapped a crossing pass by Reds keeper Brynn Nash (Saskatoon, SK).

The two teams went into the half tied 1-1.

“That was the first time we’d been down all season,” said Boudreau. ” I think it was good for us, in a way, to feel like that.”

Boudreau scored her second just after half-time, tapping a loose ball past a sprawling Nash.

The Reds pressed late but couldn’t find the equalizer.

“It comes from the team,” said Boudreau, of her two-goal effort. “It comes from our midfielders, it comes from our defenders playing it through to our midfielders. I can’t take all the credit. They are team efforts and I was just there to put them in.”

“I’m disappointed with the loss, for sure,” said Reds head coach Jon Crossland. “Much like most of our losses this season, I’m not overly disappointed with the effort. I thought we performed fairly well, especially the first 25 minutes of the game, I thought we took it to them and they had to answer some questions.”

The Axewomen are now 7-0-1 and see their next action on Wednesday when they visit Dalhousie.

The Reds, now 3-4-1 are in Charlottetown on Sunday to face the UPEI Panthers. Game time is 3:00 pm.

  • Axewomen head to finals after 55-0 win over UPEI

Axewomen head to finals after 55-0 win over UPEI

WOLFVILLE, N.S. – For the eighth year in a row, the Axewomen Rugby team will be taking on StFX in the AUS Championship game after Acadia’s 55-0 win over the visiting UPEI Panthers in AUS semi-final action.

Subway Player of the Game Annie Kennedy posted three tries and five conversions in the Axewomen’s third win of the season against the Panthers.

The Axewomen scored three minutes into the opening half when Emilie Merilainen had an easy off to Annie Kennedy who had an easy thirty-yard sprint to the try line. Kennedy converted her first of three tries.

Maddie MacKenzie’s hard work paid off as she was taken down inside the 22-yard line and tossed it off to Nicole Pahl for Acadia’s second try in the opening 12 minutes.

The Axewomen would only score one more try in the opening half. Bailey Dembicki’s try was converted by Kennedy for a 19-0 halftime lead over the Panthers.

Former Panther Alysha Corrigan picked up a loose ball 15 yards outside of the Panther try line and used her speed and strength to open the second half.

Annie Kennedy scored her second try of the night off of a great outside pass from Gillian Bergsma to push the Axewomen lead to 29-0 at the 45-minute mark of the game.

Ten minutes later the lead was extended to 36- on a Maddie MacKenzie try that was converted by Kennedy.

Emilie Merilainen extended the lead to 43-0 with just over 20 minutes remaining in the match on a run that demonstrated her speed in open space. Kennedy converted the try.

Alysha Corrigan scored her second try of the night on a long 50+ yard run that used several straight arms to elude the Panther tacklers.

With a 48-0 lead, Axewoman Annie Kennedy added her third try of the evening and converted her fifth try of the game to give Acadia a 55-0 win over UPEI.

Kennedy, who was named the Subway Player of the Game, noted that the team plays one game at a time.

“We just take it game by game with the hope of winning the AUS next weekend. We will worry about AUS before we worry about Nationals,” said Kennedy.

Kennedy was concerned about the Axewomen’s lull in the first half.

“We definitely have some things to work on. It was our performance 100%. We didn’t have the ball the first half so that’s something we definitely have to work on. A little more possession. That will come. We are pretty confident going into the AUS championship,” noted Kennedy.

The Axewomen face StFX on Friday at 6:00 p.m. in Antigonish. Watch the Championship live on AUStv.ca.

  • Axewomen top X-Women 2-0

All goals came in the opening half.

The first goal came at the hands of third year striker Jenna Boudreau who worked past the defender in the 18 yard box and picked up a lose ball for a one-time kick past StFX keeper Erin Visser 19 minutes into the opening half.

Senior midfielder Katie Ross scored the Axewomen’s second goal on a penalty kick assessed to Axewomen after Boudreau was taken down by an X-Women as she broke for the net. Ross’ kick was at mid-level and to the right of the keeper who dove in vain for the well placed boot.

“We played well and stayed discipline”, s,aid Axewomen head coach Amit Batra.

The Axewomen out-shot StFX 13-4, with Visser making six saves, while her Acadia counter-part Spencer Skinner, stopped two shots for the shut-out.

“Our whole goal was to try and peak at the right time of year. We’ve often started out really well, but the key is how we finish. We’ve had a solid season and look to keep improving every game,” noted Batra.

The Axewomen soccer team concluded the 2017 regular season with a 3-1 win against the visiting UPEI Panthers. Acadia improved to 7-3-2 and concluded the season fourth in the AUS standings.

Out-shooting UPEI 24-2 with Panther keeper Amanda Stanyer posting 11 saves on 14 shots on goal, the Axewomen dominated the last 45 minutes by scoring all of their goals in the second half.

Team leading scorer Jenna Boudreau scored her fifth goal of the season on a great individual effort at the 52 minute mark.

Twenty-four minutes later, Meghan Earle scored an amazing goal on a bicycle-style kick that thrilled all of those in attendance.

Annie little scored the ‘insurance goal’ with twelve minutes remaining in the half.

Panther Jennifer Balderston scored with just over two minutes remaining in the game on back-up keeper Nicole McInnis who replaced Spencer Skinner in the second half.

“We had a lot of the play the first half, it was a matter just continue to do the same things. Our locker room was actually great on making sure we focus on the process. We kept creating the chances on goal, but their goalkeeper was excellent,” said Acadia head coach Amit Batra following the game when asked what changes were made in the second half.

The Axewomen are matched up against defending AUS champion and host of this year’s AUS Subway women’s soccer championship StFX this Thursday evening at 7:00 p.m. in quarterfinal play.

  • Soccer Hero: Acadia Hosts Women’s Soccer Championship

It isn’t very often that the CIS Women’s Soccer Championship makes its way to Wolfville. Acadia was host to the event in its second year of existence in 1989, and again in 2000. Now, sixteen years later, Acadia University was honoured with hosting the Championship once again on its 30th anniversary. The CIS Women’s Soccer Championship took place on November 10-13, which featured eight teams from conferences across Canada, including Acadia’s Axewomen, all gathered in one place to compete to become the national champions. Over the course of four days, eleven games were played to determine which team of the eight would be the last ones standing.

With four recently announced AUS Soccer All-Stars, the Axewomen fought hard and advanced to the consolation semi-finals where victory was taken in a shoot out against the StFX X-Women, securing a spot in the consolation finals where Acadia defeated Saskatchewan in another shoot out. The cheers from the crowd during the four-day event proves just how proud our community is of the Acadia Axewomen soccer team. While the games were certainly a highlight this fall study break, we were also reminded that the greatest honours often happen off the field. The 2016 Championship has recognized Laura Sanders, former Axewomen soccer coach, as Honorary Chairperson.

Sanders came to Acadia in 1984 to coach soccer which had not seen varsity results yet. However, during the 80’s and 90’s, the Axewomen soccer team saw great success winning six conference titles and even claiming the national title in 1990. Due to this high success rate, coach Laura Sanders has been awarded the AUAA (now AUS) coach-of-the-year six times, and holds a CIAU (now U Sports) coach-of-the-year under her belt for the 1990 national championship win. Sanders retired from coaching for Acadia women’s soccer in 2001, but remains a fan favourite in the Acadia Sports Hall of Fame and goes down in history as coaching some of the best University soccer teams in Canada. For the 30th year anniversary of the CIS Women’s Soccer Championship, there is no one better to be Honorary Chairperson than our own Laura Sanders.

Laura Sanders has consistently proved to Axemen and Axewomen that the glory of a team is more than just how the game is played on the field. She exemplifies dedication, determination, teamwork, and knows exactly how to overcome adversity. These qualities are what makes the history of Acadia athletes so tremendous, no matter the number of wins, losses, or titles.  Sanders demonstrates all that Acadia strives to be, and we are proud to congratulate her on being Honorary Chairperson for the 2016 CIS Women’s Soccer Championship.
