    Acadia’s Culture of Getting Involved

How fascinating is it to go to a school where it is so cool to be involved in extracurriculars? People often talk about the small school experience that Acadia has to offer. Smaller class sizes mean more personal connections with professors, less students on campus means getting to know people quicker, and other benefits about the small size of Acadia are often used to market it as a great choice for a university. One of the best parts of Acadia that’s rarely discussed, though, is the culture of being involved that’s so prevalent.

Being involved at Acadia is not only normal, but it’s expected of students. Compared to a lot of other Canadian schools, especially larger schools outside of the Maritimes, Acadia encourages students to find their passion and to do something with it. Students sometimes find it surprising to come out of high school and to be so encouraged to be involved in the school and community. This is what Acadia should market: it’s ability to give students so many opportunities to discover their interests and to pursue them, despite its small size.

Being a part of something other than just classes allows students to destress by doing things they enjoy. Students tend to be happier when they feel like they have responsibilities outside of doing work, which is why it’s so great that Acadia is so welcoming towards those who are involved.

Here are just a few of the ways students can get involved with extracurriculars at Acadia:

    1. Clubs

There are so many opportunities for students to be a part of a club. Just a few of those available include

    -Medical Response Team

    -Model UN

    -Sisters of Color

    -InterVarsity

    -Program Societies

    1. Sports

    -Varsity & Club sports

    -Intramurals

    -The Athletic Complex

    1. On-campus Activities

    -Residence Assistants

    -Campus tour guides

    -Jobs at the SUB

    1. Volunteer Opportunities

    -S.M.I.L.E.

    -Kinderskills

    -Triple A

    1. Jobs/volunteer opportunities within your program

    -Teaching Assistants

    -The Writing Centre

    -M.A.S.H.

    -SIAM

    1. The Athenaeum!

This is by no means an exhaustive list. A more comprehensive list can be found on Acadia’s website, but it still does not include everything there is to do in Wolfville. Perhaps it’s because the school is so small that it is that much more important to find something that interests you. With so many opportunities, a lot of students end up finding multiple ways to get involved, which makes Acadia such a unique school.

Some Superb Science Clubs to Join in 2020

Missed out on the club extravaganza? Need to find some extra circulars to keep yourself busy? Trying to expand your social life beyond the classroom? Look no further! If you need some more information on some great science clubs to join this semester, look no further, some great options are listed just below:

    Biology Society

Hey Biologists! The Acadia Biology Society serves to enrich the academic and social experience of Acadia’s Biology students (although to be honest, there is not much room for improvement)! Whether you need assistance with your Bio courses, or want to network with professors and fellow students, our events will help you succeed as a Biologist. For 1st and 2nd year students, our weekly Bio Help Centre consists of advisory sessions for studying, scientific writing, and reviewing lecture material. If group sessions aren’t your thing, then the Biology Student Mentorship Program provides a one-on-one approach! For upper-year students, we offer our Research and Course Gong Shows, to give a baseline to students pursuing Honours, Co-Op, and/or Research Topics. One of our newest, the Annual De-Stress event, is open for everyone to discuss the physiology of stress, mental health awareness, and give feedback to our faculty (The 2nd annual destress event, “All in with Adrenaline” will take place THIS MONDAY, January 20th, beginning at 6:00PM at the KCIC Auditorium, and ending at 8:00PM with a reception (pizza and snacks provided) upstairs in the study area). A complete list of what we do would be too long, so if you are interested in our events, then please join your respective Biology Graduating Class Facebook page (below), follow our Instagram (@acadiabiologysociety), and pay attention to you emails!

    WISE

WISE (Women in Science and Engineering) Acadia is a group of female faculty, staff and students who gather together to promote full participation by women in STEAM fields.

Centred initially around women in academia, the group has supported learning opportunities and identified opportunities for Acadia women faculty members, staff, and students. Following a gathering held in October 2014 additional WISE Acadia priorities were identified related to mentoring, science camps for young women, and a course offering for undergraduates in Women and Science. WISE Acadia is currently developing and delivering programs and holding events to address these priorities.

WISE has been supported in these endeavours by members of Women’s and Gender Studies. The mission of WGS is to foster a vibrant, dynamic campus community that critically engages with issues of gender, sexuality, race, class and ability. Working together with WISE Acadia students, staff, and faculty, WGS strives to address inequities and draw attention to opportunities facing all women.

  • Why Does It Matter?

    Why Does It Matter?

With midterm season approaching I find myself grumpy, tired, and wondering why what I am doing matters. Every year it’s the same: doubt fills your mind and you’re wondering why you joined X team or signed up for X club. All the responsibilities are beginning to add up and you just want to get good grades in your classes.

Everyone that goes to any university anywhere will get a degree. What separates an Acadia biology major from a STFX biology major? All the enrolment advisors will tell you that it is our small class sizes or having such a unique environment nearby to study, but many other universities are promising similar if not the same things.

Remember those clubs and teams you’re thinking about dropping so that you can focus on your degree? Those clubs and teams are going to be what separates you from that biology major from STFX. Employers are going to care just as much or more about your dedication to varsity sports, your strong debating abilities gained from Debate Club, or your field work experience gained from the field trips in the Fletcher Geology Club.

You’re also going to make many more friends through these clubs and teams as opposed to sitting in a lecture with 50 other people. These friends are probably going to influence your life more than your lab partner will.  Fundraisers, trips, and celebrations are going to bring you closer to each other and even if you drift apart after graduation those memories of them will change you and you’ll come to appreciate the things you learned from them.

I’m not saying grades don’t matter, but everyone focuses on being the best student with the highest average.  Why not spend time on developing yourself as a person instead? Those clubs and teams do matter. Even if they are taking up a lot of your time that could be spent learning how to balance chemical equations or memorizing Shakespeare, you are still learning and growing as a person. At the end of your degree you’re not going to think back to all the fun you had in class, you’re going to be remembering all the trips and events of clubs and teams you took part in that allowed you to express your passions.
