Why Everyone Should Watch This Is Us

This Is Us, a popular TV drama, is one of my favorite shows of all time. There are so many reasons for this, but I’ve only listed a few. I hope it inspires you to start watching it, too.

    1. It teaches life lessons

Without spoiling too much, there are many examples throughout the show of characters who struggle with such real issues that viewers can’t help but learn and grow alongside them. One of the times I felt myself most invested in the characters’ lives was when a young girl tells her parents she’s gay. I had never truly understood the difficulties that come with this. Although I’ve still never personally experienced it, and therefore can’t fully comprehend what it’s like to go through, the show’s depiction of one person’s experience allowed me to get a glimpse at how hard that can be. I now have a much deeper appreciation for the pain people go through just to be themselves.

We also see topics such as alcoholism, adoption, racism, toxic relationships, mental health, and so many others being explored so openly. The show has allowed me to think about these things more profoundly and to learn from the characters’ experiences. Through the characters’ struggles, the show tells us that it’s okay, and that it’s normal, to experience the things they do.

    1. You feel like you’re a part of the characters’ lives

The producers are extremely talented in making you invested in the storylines of the characters by creating the feeling that you know them personally. Since they are so vulnerable, viewers feel like they are there with them, learning, helping, and growing. One of the characters in the show experiences panic attacks and anxiety. By depicting this so openly, it’s easy to feel like you’re experiencing those moments with him. This may make you reflect on similar situations from your own life, which connects you to the show that much more.

    1. There is so much love

Since the show follows the main characters from birth to adulthood, viewers experience different types of love throughout their entire lives. We see supportive and healthy relationships, as well as toxic examples of love. Familial love is the base of the entire show as it’s represented through arguments, sacrifices, and hardships. Romance is another huge part of the series, with passionate love stories, divorce, and love in the LGBTQ+ community all being explored. There is also a focus on the characters’ adoration for friends, pets, music, and other passions in life. All of this love makes the show so much more appealing.

    1. You’ll feel every emotion

If you ask anyone else who’s seen the series, they’ll either tell you that it’s the most amazing show they’ve ever seen, or that it’s the most amazing show they’ve ever seen but they can’t watch it anymore because it makes them cry every time they watch it. The vulnerability of the characters gives everyone something to relate to, which is often a cause for tears. The show is also hilarious. With the close bond the siblings have comes humour that families can relate to. The fact that the characters’ stories can make viewers cry and laugh simultaneously is rare.

4 Really Cool Career Ideas in Case You Fail all of Your Exams and Have to Change Your Identity and Move Overseas to Hide Your Shame

On this day, December 7th, 2017, we find ourselves on the eve of final exams, my friends. I don’t know how you’re feeling, but if you are like me and have been wondering if you’re going to pass your classes or if you’re going to need to drop out, move overseas, and change your identity to hide your shame, fear not! Here is a list of really cool career options for you to start your new life.

    1. Coffee Farming in Panama

How to do it: Move to Panama. Plead your case with a coffee farmer. Become a farm hand.

Pros: Lots of time outside. Reconnect with mother nature.

Cons: If you have never farmed before you might have a little bit of trouble

    1. Bootleg Icelandic Frozen Yogurt Stand

How to do it: Go to the independent grocer. Buy all of the SKYR Icelandic yogurt. Freeze it. Pack it in a suitcase. Fly to Iceland. Let the yogurt melt a little bit. Put it in cones. Sell the Icelandic people their own yogurt.

Pros: People LOVE frozen yogurt. Lots of money in this business.

Cons: This might be a crime. I’m not sure.

    1. Escort for MILFs and DILFs

How to do it: Use the rest of your student loan to buy fancy clothes. Write some craigslist ads. Kijiji ads. Facebook ads. e-Harmony ads. Sell your young and hot company to some rich middle aged people. Attend parties, high school reunions, etc.

Pros: You will be able to pay off your student loan? Also you will get to attend some parties.

Cons: Some people might frown upon the business of selling yourself but I mean… eh.

    1. In-Person Telemarketing

How to do it: You’ve heard a telemarketer. The almost never succeed. Why? Because you can hang up and get rid of them. The solution: Take your phone into their house. Call them from the inside. Talk to them on the phone across the dinner table. If they hang up on you, you’re still there. After 3 hours, offer to leave for a modest price.

Pros: I am sure that you will make lots of money doing this. You will get to travel, see lots of people’s houses.

Cons: This might be a crime too… maybe multiple crimes.

Full Disclosure: I have never tried any of these. I cannot guarantee their success. If you try it and they go horribly wrong, I reserve the right to not be sued for damages.

P.S. You might be thinking, “if this is a list, why are all of them number 1?” That is because all of these ideas are amazing and will definitely work so they are all #1. No second-rate ideas here.

5 Ways to Keep Those Eyes Dry During Times of Stress

Tips on how to stop crying all the time

We’ve all been there. It’s finals week. You’re in the gym, sitting at your desk and trying not to breathe too loud in case it echoes, and you’re trying desperately not to move a f*kin inch in case you shift the desk or the chair and it makes that horrible noise and everyone will turn their heads and look at you with that blank gaze that should mean nothing but actually means they hate you. So you’re there, trying not to become “The Exam Deviant,” but then someone’s phone goes off, and you’re relieved because they’ve officially taken the title for the season and you can breathe again, because nothing you do short of actually falling out of your desk an hour deep will be as obnixious as The Exam Deviant, but before you can really relax, the prof says to open your exam. You see the first page, and a few silent tears begin to flood your vision. What now? Ideally, you allow yourself a few moments of shameless self-pity and then buckle down to get the job done. Worst case scenario, you 100% break down and start ugly sobbing in the middle of the gym. My name is Emily Ellis, I am a stealthy exam crier, and I am here to help.

    1. Cry before the Stress.

I’m serious. Outsmart the stress. Have your ugly cry while you’re studying for your exam, or before the presentation, or whatever you know you’re going to be stressed about. If you’ve completely dissociated from your own life and can’t feel anything about your situation (no worries, I’ve been there), have on hand a playlist of sad songs, or that tragic episode from a show, or a movie, or anything that tugs on your heartstrings no matter how emotionally absent you may be. Watch. Listen. Don’t fight the tears, just lock your door. If you get your ugly cry out beforehand, you can dissociate again before the real stress takes hold, and you won’t find yourself sobbing in the exam room. Voila.

    1. Dress up!

Spend an hour making yourself feel hot before anything stressful. Wear that sweet outfit you’ve been saving for Friday night. Do your makeup. Wing your eyeliner. (Sex, gender. That doesn’t matter. If you’ve never worn winged eyeliner, try it. It’s amazing. Feels great. If you’re too good for winged eyeliner, my condolences lol what else is your pride stopping you from trying.)

This way, if you fail, at least you looked good while you did it. They’ll say, “Hm… that presentation was one of the worst things I’ve ever witnessed, but I can’t even hate on them because that outfit is making me feel some kind of way. I am in love.” Now you have a series of potential suitors and a failing grade, not just a failing grade. Also, I’m always reluctant to cry when I’m wearing makeup. It’ll smear, and the kind of woman I feel like when I wear makeup would never cry over something petty. She’d give a side-eye, an airy and condescending “Hm.” and strut away (Think Meryl Streep in Devil Wears Prada). Voila.

    1. Benadryl Drops

Ok so this is more a tip on how to trick people into thinking you cry less than you do. You couldn’t stop the tears, you had an ugly cry, but now you’re done and ready to move on with your day. Except, your eyes are still all teary and everyone you see will know that you were just crying really hard, and they’ll ask what’s wrong, and you’ll have to say “nothing” and they won’t believe you, and it’s awkward. So… break out those leftover allergy eye drops from the spring/summer/fall. They work great. No more redness, no more tears. Amazing. Voila.

    1. Cry in the shower

I mentioned this before in one of my shower reviews, but the shower is an idea Cry Space™. The water is loud and will mix with your tears, and if anyone asks why your eyes are red, you can say you got shampoo in them. It’s foolproof. Your roommate might ask you why your pillowcase is always wet in the morning, but they’d never ask you why your shower is wet. Viola.

    1. Have a readily-available series of good memories

If you feel that telltale sting in your eyes, but you’re not in a safe Cry Space™, you need to keep the tears to a minumum. Stop them in their tracks, or at the very least, you need to postpone the inevitable. To do this, think of the best day of your life. Dwell on it. Force a smile. It usually works. For me personally, I think about the International Town Crier Competition Finale in Grand Pré. I hear the echoes of their hearty shouting, and I know that everything will be okay in the end.
